Key Summary
  • Gambia experiences a tropical savanna climate (Aw) with a pronounced rainy season from June to October and an extended dry season from November to May.
  • The country’s flat, low-lying terrain along the Gambia River and Atlantic coast keeps temperatures consistently warm and humidity high throughout the year.
  • The dry season is marked by the dusty harmattan wind from the Sahara, which lowers visibility but brings cooler evenings, while the wet season transforms the landscape with intense monsoon rains.

Gambia’s climate is defined by the seasonal pulse of the West African monsoon. Under the Köppen climate classification, the entire country sits squarely in the Aw (tropical savanna) zone, a regime of wet summers and dry winters driven by the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Lying roughly at latitude 13°N and nowhere rising more than about 50 metres above sea level, Gambia has no hills or uplands to moderate its heat. The result is a year-round warmth where coastal sea breezes offer only limited relief. Average maximum temperatures typically hover between 30°C and 34°C (86°F to 93°F), while relative humidity rarely dips below 50%, even in the driest months. The climate narrative here is one of two starkly alternating seasons. From November to May, the dry harmattan trade wind sweeps down from the Sahara, bringing dusty skies and lower temperatures at night. By June, the wind shifts to the south-west, pulling in moisture-laden Atlantic air that triggers a period of powerful tropical rainfall. Our WeatherBox climate charts show this dramatic switch in monthly precipitation totals.

Although Gambia is a narrow sliver of land, never wider than 48 kilometres, slight geographical differences influence the climate experience. The Atlantic coastline, around Banjul and the main resort areas, enjoys a modest maritime breeze that takes the edge off the afternoon heat during the dry season. Further upriver, towards Janjanbureh and Basse Santa Su, the harmattan haze often feels thicker and the pre-rains heat more intense. When the monsoon arrives, the whole country experiences heavy but brief afternoon downpours. The river swells, and reserves like Abuko come alive with birdlife against a backdrop of intense greenery. This is the season for dramatic, cloud-heavy skies and dazzling sunsets, yet the stubbornly high humidity can make even gentle exploration tiring. The wettest month is typically August, while March and April often feel the most oppressive before the rains break.

For travel, the most favourable window runs from November to February, when the dry season and harmattan breeze keep humidity in check and sunshine hours are generous. These months are ideal for beach stays on the coast, for spotting birdlife and monkeys along the river, and for exploring markets without sudden downpours. March to May remain dry but can be oppressively hot, often making outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable. The rainy season from June to October is less predictable: landscapes turn a dazzling green and tourist numbers thin out, but heavy rains may disrupt road travel and increase mosquitoes. Pack light, quick-drying clothes, a broad-brimmed hat, sun protection, and a sturdy raincoat if visiting in summer. A light wrap helps on cooler harmattan evenings.
