Key Summary
  • Honduras has a predominantly tropical savanna (Aw) climate, but sharp geographic contrasts produce distinct zones from monsoon-soaked coasts to cool highlands.
  • The mountainous interior, including Tegucigalpa and Copán, enjoys a subtropical highland climate (Cwb) with mild temperatures and lower humidity.
  • Caribbean shores receive heavy rainfall year-round due to trade winds, while the Pacific coast stays far drier, influenced by a rain shadow.

Honduras lies within the tropics between 13 and 16 degrees north, where a rugged central mountain chain splinters the climate into markedly different experiences. WeatherBox’s Köppen climate map highlights three main zones: tropical savanna (Aw) covers the lowland majority, a tropical monsoon (Am) belt hugs the Caribbean coast and Bay Islands, and a subtropical highland climate (Cwb) appears in elevations above about 1,000 metres (3,300 feet). The seasonal pendulum swings between a distinct wet season (May to October) and a dry season (November to April), though the timing and intensity vary widely by region. It is geography—not just latitude—that dictates whether you find a parched Pacific beach or a dripping rainforest trail.

Trade winds deliver copious moisture to the northern coast and Bay Islands. Roatán and Utila receive well over 2,000 mm (80 inches) annually with only a brief lull around March and April. The Mosquitia region slides into tropical rainforest (Af) territory, with no true dry month. The Pacific Gulf of Fonseca, in the highlands’ rain shadow, bakes during a stark dry season when Choluteca can exceed 35°C (95°F). The interior highlands—Tegucigalpa or the pine-fringed Maya ruins of Copán—offer daytime highs of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F) and refreshing nights. A midsummer drought known as the *canicula* often interrupts the wet season with a few weeks of sunshine in July or August, before heavy rains and hurricane potential peak again from September to October.

For travel, the dry season months from December to April bring lower humidity, blue skies, and the most favourable conditions for exploring Copán’s elaborately carved stelae or snorkelling the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef off the Bay Islands. The Pacific coast and interior are especially pleasant during this period, though sun protection is essential. The May to November wet season drenches the landscape in green, but rural roads become muddy and daily afternoon downpours are common, particularly in the mountains. September and October usually has the highest hurricane risk on the Caribbean side, when travel can be seriously disrupted. Packing light cottons and a wide-brimmed hat works year-round, but a sturdy rain jacket is invaluable if you venture to the northern coast even during dry months, or anywhere countrywide during the wet season. Honduras’s climatic jigsaw means there is almost always a region enjoying favourable weather. For month-by-month climate charts and rainfall data, explore WeatherBox to help time your trip.
