Key Summary
  • Much of Rwanda falls under a tropical savanna (Aw) climate, where altitude rather than latitude shapes daily temperatures.
  • The mountainous west and north shift into a subtropical highland (Cwb) zone, with cooler air and frequent mist on volcano slopes.
  • A bimodal rainfall pattern creates two distinct windows for travel, with the long dry season offering the most settled conditions for viewing wildlife.

Straddling the equator at elevations that rarely dip below 1,000 metres, Rwanda’s climate defies the steaming heat often associated with its location. Across the country’s central plateau and the wildlife-rich eastern plains, the Köppen Aw (tropical savanna) classification prevails. Here, temperatures are comfortably warm rather than extreme, with daytime highs typically ranging from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), and rainfall follows a clear seasonal rhythm. Moving into the far west and the chain of volcanoes that define the northern border, the climate grades into a subtropical highland (Cwb) regime. Elevations above roughly 1,800 metres bring cooler nights that can dip to 10°C (50°F) or lower, and the moist air rising up the Congo-Nile divide sustains a belt of mist that feeds dense montane forests. In the highest, wettest pockets of Nyungwe Forest, conditions come close to a tropical rainforest (Af) climate, with torrential downpours possible in any month.

The year is shaped by two rainy seasons rather than a simple summer–winter pattern. The long rains from March to May deliver heavy, sustained showers that can turn laterite roads to slick mud and swell the rivers, while a shorter secondary wet spell arrives from October to November. Between them, the December-to-February window is generally drier, though brief thunderstorms still pass through. The most extended dry season stretches from June to September, when a dusty haze can linger over the savannah and night skies stay clear. Geography reinforces these rhythms: the eastern lowlands of Akagera National Park sit in a rain shadow, receiving less moisture, so the golden grasslands there bake under sunnier skies. By contrast, the high slopes of Volcanoes National Park trap orographic rainfall even during nominally dry months, meaning the trails threading through bamboo and hagenia trees are seldom bone-dry. This explains why visitors hoping to watch mountain gorillas in the mist-shrouded Virunga volcanoes often encounter damp conditions at any season, while a game drive across the sun-bleached plains of Akagera can feel fully arid.

For broad travel conditions, the long dry season from June to September is widely favoured. Trails in the highlands are firmer, the risk of heavy rain interrupting a safari is lower, and the wildlife concentrates around water sources, making sightings easier. The shorter dry stretch from December to February can also work well, though afternoon cloudbursts remain possible. March to May sees the most persistent rains, and while the countryside turns dramatically lush, rutted roads and slippery footing add practical challenges. Packing adapts to altitude more than latitude: light, breathable fabrics for lowland afternoons, a warm fleece for elevated evenings, a waterproof shell, and sturdy shoes are sensible in every season. Our climate charts and month-by-month precipitation data at WeatherBox let you weigh these patterns against your own itinerary, helping you time your visit to the rolling hills and rainforests with a clearer sense of the skies ahead.
